sidekick 2009

right as i was about to get picked up by the AT&T iPhone band wagon, t-mobile makes me think twice. microsoft, who recently aquired danger, is now at the helms of this project. surprisingly enough, they are not going to be running windows on it. instead, they have chosen to run the free open source os NetBSD.

obviously its still not on iPhone's level technology wise, but the features listed here, in addition to the keyboard i love so dearly, are more than enough to hold me over for now.

The Clise Mansion Shoot

Yesterday was the first big Photo Event I through together. I already think it was a huge success. My idea was to bring together some of my favorite photographers and models allong with makeup artists/wardrobe people/hair stylists. All in a big location with both indoor/outdoor spots. We rented the Historic Clise Mansion at Marymoor park. Such a cool day of shooting with the perfect weather (an eerie foggy day).

Ill post a few of my favorite Images so far (from myself, barto, lauren max, patrick wright)... Here is the link to our Flickr Pool where photographers will be submitting pics over the next week or two as they finish editing and film gets developed.

east meets west

tonight, the NBA's best western conference team hosts the best eastern conference team in what may be a preview to this years NBA finals. but wether the cavs or the lakers are the better team wont be the real question tonight.

"whos the best player on the planet, lebron or kobe?" thats the never ending debate among nba fans, and even nba players themselves. and let me start off by saying this: you're not losing with either one.

still, there must be one. on one end of the scale you have kobe, who has won 3 championship rings and is the current MVP of the league. on the other there is lebron, who is 24 years young and is currently the leading candidate for this year's prized award.

theres the recurring question of wether kobe could have won those 3 rings without shaq and, so far, the answer is no as shaq has won a ring himself without kobe. and even with an equally supportive cast in pau gasol & lamar odom, the lakers were demolished by the celtics in 6 games. lebron and a much less stellar supporting cast took the eventual champs to the brink in 7 games.

or what about kobe's unbelievable 81 pt barrage vs. the raptors? impressive to say the least. but is lebron's takeover of the pistons any less impressive? 81 points is amazing, but its in a regular season game vs. the raptors. is 29 of the last 30 points in a hostile playoff environment against a defensive minded team not more meaningful?

and most would say they'd want kobe with the ball in the last seconds of a game, and i probably would too, but that doesn't mean he is a better player in the clutch. infact, according to 82games.com, lebron tops the league in crunch time. still, i'll give it to kobe to take my last second shot of a game. but to think a game is based on last second heroics is false fantasy and a mere hope from fans (myself included) wishing for a theatrical finish. it is a 48 minute game and cleveland rarely gets into those situations as they lead the NBA in margin of victory by averaging an 11+ point differential.

maybe a better way to guage who is better is not by stats, but by those who actually play against them. the denver nuggets picked james over kobe 3-0. chauncey billups, who was a witness to james' playoff takeover, mentions how the cavs have lost a lot of players to injury and yet lebron hasn't let his team miss a step. nene and anthony carter point out that lebron has done what kobe has done with the lakers, but with much weaker options surrounding him. so let me ask you this, if kobe was on the cavaliers, would cleveland be at 31-7? no. if lebron was on the lakers, would the lake show be at 31-8? no... they might be at 39-0.

but, that is why they play the game. tonights match-up is probably more important to the lakers than it is to the cavs. for one, its at staples center. and although lebron has won the last 5 against kobe, the cavs are even more undermanned as they have lost 3 of their starters to injury. so a laker win is almost expected, whereas a cavalier win would further tote lebrons impact on a team.

will the outcome of tonights game settle the debate? definitely not. and theres probably nothing that ever will. the closest shooting guard to MJ vs. a dynamic player the league has never seen. style and finesse vs speed and power. unstoppable shooter vs. unstoppable finisher. best player of the last 5 years vs best player of the next 5 years. pick your poison

lebrowns

theres been some murmur among the media of an "announcement" lebron james had for everyone on january 18th. lebron stated it was about his first love and there were pictures that "leaked" on the net a couple of days ago, which depicted the basketball phenom in an NFL football jersey, that had the internet in a frenzy.

well all the hoopla (and business savy) was about this state farm commercial that is supposed to air tomorrow during the NFC and AFC championship football games.

cavs need more than insurance if they hope to beat the lakers this monday as they are missing 60% of their starting line-up. but the lebron vs. kobe match up will be one to watch for the ages... and im sure i'll write another blog before monday pertaining to it

KL Drivers is the Craziest

Greetings from KL.

I am currently in Malaysia with a team doing our "Global Entrepreneurship Lab" Project for B-School. Having a great time in Malaysia working with our host company in Kuala Lumpur. There are 4 teams in Malaysia and over 50 teams spread out doing projects in South America, Africa and Asia.

We spent the first week in Kuala Lumpur. They gave us a nice bear and a hat from the A1 Team Malaysia Racing Team they sponsor (A1 is F1 cars with national teams eg: Malaysia, UK, USA). Here we are in the office with the CTO, our hats and bears.

We flew to Penang on Thursday of last week. Penang is like the Hawaii of Malaysia. I
think I like Penang more, however. There we met up with some great hosts, including the CEO. We worked on the project there for 2 days while enjoying Penang at night. Our hosts took us out to a local hang out at the docks where we enjoyed a wide variety of local foods and beers.
The CEO worked out a stay at the Penang Hilltop Hotel Bellevue which is a hotel on the very
top of a hill overlooking the city of Georgetown, Penang. The hotel owner, like the founders of our host company are all MIT alum.

The road up to the hotel is extremely steep and requires a jeep to get to the top. We met
up with the driver of the 4x4 at a cool colonial-era house in the middle of Penang which
serves as the Hotel's office in the city. There, they had this neat Mini
parked. It was in perfect condition and was pretty neat to see after seeing nothing but Proton Cars (Malaysian cars based on the Lancer) and scooters all week.

After hanging out for a few minutes, we jumped into the Mitsubishi 4x4 SUV and headed up the hill. It was crazy-touge like with monkeys hanging out in the middle of the windy, steep road. The driver had no fear and charged up with the monkeys always jumping out of the way just in time. The driver definitely knew every turn on the climb and we got to the top of the hill in about 10 minutes. There we met up with the CEO and the owner of the hotel and enjoyed an excellent dinner on the hill overlooking Penang.

The next morning, we got up to watch the sunrise and to go for a jog around the hilltop.
The view was amazing and jog up and down the top part of the hill was challenging. There
were some amazing houses on the top of the hill.

Here we are making the MIT sign on the hilltop.

After this, we went back down to the city by a cable-car that is cut into the hill. We spent the day lounging around the pool and checking out the shopping mall before going for drinks in the local hotspot.

The next day after recovering from hangovers, we went to the Feringi beach. I really wanted to rent some scooters to go there, but this got vetoed due to the potential danger of riding on the opposite side of the road with people having a very "loose" interpretation of traffic rules. So instead we hired a driver. At the beach, I sort of made up for the no scooters by renting the highest power Waverunner they had and going full speed for awhile, scaring one of my team members, who was on the back of the Waverunner in her words "nearly to death".

We flew back to KL on Sunday and have been enjoying KL more and more. Yesterday, I even got to see how good the private hospitals are here after getting a clogged ear from swimming and having them fix it in a snap. Last night we got to finally go to the base of the Petronas Towers. Next week, we will have a chance to go into one of the high floors and hopefully through the skybridge.

This weekend, we will be in KL and will hope to make adventures in KL. One thing on the
agenda for me is to visit the Sepang F1 track and to go on the Karting track they have
there. Will put up more pics and stuff soon.

Sorry for the long post. Will try to post less more often. Back to work...
